Narsarsuaq is a town in Kujalleq municipality in Greenland and tourism is the main industry in the town which attracts thousands of tourists throughout the year. The word Narsarsuaq means the great plain in Greenlandic and has well developed infrastructure like hotels, hostel, shop, cafe and hospital and infrastructure situated close to the airport. Coordinates of Narsarsuaq are 61.1611° N, 45.4278° W.

 

History of Narsarsuaq:

Narsarsuaq was inhabited by Eastern Settlement of the Norsemen during the Erick the Red era and the settlement of Norse was also found in the town. The United States constructed the air base at Narsarsuaq called as Blue West One in the year 1941 which was used during the war against the Europe. Later in the year 1951, Denmark and U.S. agreed to operate the airbase jointly and later it was suspended.

Signal Hill:

Signal Hill is one of the prominent sights in the Narsarsuaq and from the top of the mountain one can view the stunning views over the fjord and the surrounding area.

 

Narsarsuaq Museum:

Narsarsuaq Museum was established in the year 1991 which displays the photos and artifacts from the American Air Base that was used during the Second World War and museum is open from June to September and admission is free.

Hiking:

Narsarsuaq provides some of the best sites for hiking and Inland Ice is the situated few kilometers away from the town which is ideal for hiking and provides the stunning view of the surrounding and one should hike 300 meters to get the stunning sight of surrounding and Glacier.

 

Fishing:

Narsarsuaq provides some of the best river fishing spots to the tourists on the bays of the fjord system and Char is the common catch in both salt and fresh water.

 

Kayaking:

Narsarsuaq provides has the enormous bay in fjord system and they are protected from wind and many turbulent seas and kayaking was invented in Greenland.

 

Weather in Narsarsuaq:

Narsarsuaq has subarctic climate and the town is enormously wet with Atlantic storms thumping throughout the year and best time to visit Narsarsuaq is from May to September.

Narsarsuaq is served by Narsarsuaq Airport situated at the distance of 3 kilometers from center of the town and Narsarsuaq Airport is one of the major airports in Greenland which caters with domestic and international flights to Alluitsup Paa, Kangerlussuaq, Nanortalik, Narsaq, Nuuk, Paamiut, and Qaqortoq and seasonal flights to Copenhagen and Reykjavik.

Sea route will operate during the summer season from May to September and ferries are operated by Arctic Umiaq Line to and from Narsarsuaq weekly. Sea route is the best mode to travel in the Greenland.

Roads are well developed in the town and taxis and buses are arranged by the hotels or tourist offices in Narsarsuaq to get around the town and most of the places are within the walking distance.
