Carolina is one of the major cities of Puerto Rico situated in the northern portion of the island belonging to San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. It houses one of the largest shopping malls of Puerto Rico, Plaza Carolina and the headquarters of Executive Airlines, operated by AEA.

 

Geography of Carolina:

Carolina is located 20 km away from the capital city San Juan, surrounded by Gurabo to the south, in the west by Trujillo Alto and Canovanas towards east. It is located at 18°27′6″ N 66°4′8″ W with an altitude 16 meters and covers 117.4 sq. km land area.

 

History of Carolina:

Spanish colonists founded the town of Carolina with name Trujillo Bajo in 1816 and later it was renamed as San Fernando de la Carolina in 1857 and finally shortened to Carolina.

 

How to reach Carolina?

Carolina is catered by Luis Munoz Marin International Airport which is the largest airport in the Caribbean and located 12 km away from the downtown Carolina. It has connection with most of the major North American, European and Caribbean cities including Panama City, Atlanta, New York, Antigua, Dominica and Frankfurt.

Taxis are always available at the airport and city center and tourist can also use rental car or upgraded bus service for local travel and to reach capital city San Juan.

Roberto Clemente Statue is the major landmark of Carolina, situated at the gate of Ciudad Deportiva Roberto Clemente. Roberto Clemente (1934 –1972) was a professional and very famous baseball player from Puerto Rico.

 

Julia de Burgos Park:

Julia de Burgos Park is a recreational park situated on the Roberto Clemente Avenue. 5 mile round trip track of the park is ideal for walkers and joggers and park also houses children water park Aquasol which offers different cool off activities for children and fee is $2 per hour (age 4-12). Parking is free.

 

Carolina Beach:

Carolina Beach is a white sand and wide beach lined by short palm trees. There are many restaurants and traditional shops located at the edge of the beach. Tourists can reach the beach by hiring taxi or car.
