South Dakota was occupied by Paleoindian hunter gatherers for at least several 1000 years, but vanished around 5000 BC. European settlement in the region was established in 1743 and claimed the region for France. United States purchased the Territory from Napoleon Bonaparte in the year 1803 and trading post was established near Fort Pierre. Gold was discovered in the Black Hill in the year 1874 and several mining companies were established in the region. Economy of the state was devastated by climatic conditions in the 1930s, but economy boomed in the state after the World War II in 1941.
