History of Kirkjubaejarklaustur:

According to historians it is believed that Irish monks lived here before the establishment of Norse settlement in Iceland. The village became home to Kirkjubæjar Abbey, in 1186 until the reformation in 1550, the village was recognized during the Lakagigar volcano eruptions in the year 1783, and various churches were constructed in the village.
