Akureyri is the second largest urban area in Iceland situated in northern part of the country. Akureyri is surrounded by mountains and highest mount is Kista situated at an elevation of 1447 meters above the sea level and spans an area of 125 square kilometers (48.26 square miles). Akureyri economy mainly depends on fishing industry and in recent year, small companies have been established in the town. History of Akureyri:

Akureyri was established in 9th century by Norse Viking Helgi Margri Eyvindarson and later in 17th century, Danish merchants established their camp at the town due the natural and deep harbor. In 1778, permanent settlement was established in the town by the King of Denmark and during the World War II, the town was used as the airbase by the Norwegian-British. Urban towns were established in 20th century.

Súlur is a mountain situated at the distance of 11 kilometers from center of the town in south west part rising about 1213 meters above the sea level is a renowned destination for hiking visited by number of tourists from Europe.
