Humacao is a city situated in Puerto Rico (an unincorporated territory of the USA), around 55 km southeast of the island capital, San Juan. It consists of 10 wards and a downtown area, Humacao Pueblo. Humacao is renowned for its University of Puerto Rico at Humacao and Palmas Del Mar which is the largest resort of Puerto Rico.

 

Geography of Humacao:

Humacao coordinates with 18°08′59″ N latitude and 65°49′39″ W longitude and covers a total area of 143.63 sq. km. It is surrounded by Yabucoa in the south, Las Piedras towards west, Vieques Passage in the east and Naguabo towards north.

 

History of Humacao:

Humacao takes its name from Jumacao, a native Indian Chief and his statue erected on the east side of the town. It was formed in the month of April, 1722 and became a separate town in 1793. Fajardo-Humacao diocese (Roman Catholic diocese) was constructed on March, 2008.

 

Connectivity to Humacao:

Humacao has its own airport with only charter flights currently opeartional. The nearest public airports to Humacao are José Aponte de la Torre Airport and Patillas Airport, located around 30 km and 45 km respectively.

The major highways that pass through Humacao include Puerto Rico Highway 30, Puerto Rico Highway 53, Puerto Rico Highway 60 and Puerto Rico Highway 3.

Buses are cheaper options and rented cars and taxis are also useful.

Concatedral Dulce Nombre de Jesus:

The Concatedral Dulce Nombre de Jesus is a Catholic cathedral initially built in 1769, later underwent renovation several times during 19th and 20th centuries. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places list in 1984. Outer structure is really amazing, bring camera to take photos from outside.

 

Casa Roig:

Casa Roig is a museum showcasing the history and culture of Humacao, managed by the University of Puerto Rico. It was earlier a Prairie School-style house and was designed by Antonin Nechodoma. In 1977, it gained place in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places list.
