Nurek also called as Nurak is a city situated in Khatlon province of Tajikistan, about 72 kms southeast of national capital Dushanbe. The city was formed in the year 1960 and known for military establishment and famous Nurek Dam.
Geography of Nurek:
Nurek is positioned between latitude 38°23′ in the north and longitude 69°19′ in the east is located at an altitude of 885 meters.
Nurek Dam:
Nurek Dam is one of the biggest dams in Tajikistan on the banks of Vakhsh River. The construction of dam was started in 1961 and was completed in the year 1980. With a height of 300 meters Nurek Dam is the highest man made dam with more than 700 meters length.
The hydro electricity produced from Nurek Dam serves the higher percentage of Tajikistan electricity needs.
Nurek Reservoir:
Nurek Reservoir is the biggest reservoir in Tajikistan served by the Nurek Dam. It has a water capacity of 10.500 km³ and a surface area of 98 sq. km. and its length is more than 70 km. The water of the reservoir is used for irrigation purpose.

Nurek is served by Dushanbe International Airport with daily flights to Khujand and bordering countries destinations situated about 130 kms from the city centre.
The nearest railway station to Nurek is Dushanbe Railway Station located at a distance of 63 kms.
