Naranjo is an antique city of the Maya civilization located in Peten Basin region in Peten department of Guatemala is situated about 100 km from the department capital, Flores and 440 km from the national capital Guatemala. Together with Yaxha and Nakum, Naranjo are popularly called as Cultural Triangle. Naranjo is located on the border of Belize along the Mopan and Holmul rivers.

Naranjo is situated between latitude 17.2° in the north and longitude 89.25° in the west.

 

Etymology of Naranjo:

The literal meaning of Naranjo in local language is ‘Orange Tree’. Naranjo served as the capital of Saal, the most famous Maya kingdom. Teoberto Maler was the re-discoverer of Naranjo site in 1905. Sylvanus G. Morley and Oliver Ricketson conducted more research on Naranjo in 1910. Naranjo was once looted by dacoits and thieves during 1920. Presently there is research conducted by the government to find ancient sculptures.
