Mfuwe is one of the settlements located in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia’s Eastern Province. It is located around 100 km west of the provincial capital, Chipata and around 660 km northeast of the national capital, Lusaka. With some well facilitated accommodations and an airport, Mfuwe serves tourists coming to South Luangwa National Park. It is also known for its contribution in conserving wildlife in Luangwa Valley.

Mfuwe is noted for experiencing the highest temperature ever measured in Zambia (42.8° C), which happened on 26 October 2011.

 

How to reach Mfuwe?

Mfuwe Airport is the airport serving South Luangwa National Park, located few kilometers away from the village centre. The airport receives scheduled flights from Lilongwe International Airport in Malawi and seasonal flights from many Zambian cities. The Chipata Airport is situated around 95 km from Mfuwe with flights from Lusaka (Monday – Friday).

Mfuwe can also be reached by bus from Lusaka but that is time killing. To move in and around Mfuwe, rental cars are available at the local travel agency.

 

Food and Shopping in Mfuwe:

One can find a variety of traditional shopping options in Mfuwe with a nice and colorful locally produced jewelry, clothes and handicraft products. But, generally they ask more price from international tourists, should be careful.

Although independent dining options are few in Mfuwe, quality food can be found at campsites and lodges in the park where visitors choose their accommodation.

Chipata:

Chipata is the provincial capital, situated around 100 km southeast of Mfuwe. It is the site of many popular manmade and natural attractions including Kanjala Hill, Central Mosque and Kapata Market. Chipata can be reached by rental vehicle from Mfuwe.

 

Lukusuzi National Park:

Located around 80 km northeast of Mfuwe, the Lukusuzi National Park characterizes diverse geographical features of rugged valleys and rocky ridges. One of the main attractions of the park is endangered African Wild Dogs.
