Magway is located in Asian continent towards the west of Myanmar in Magway Region. Magway is the capital of Magway Region and was previously known as Magway Division. Irrawaddy River flows through the township and Mya Tha Lun Pagoda is a famous landmark situated towards the north of Magway city, economy of the city is mainly based on agriculture and small Businesses in the city. Magway is sited at a distance of 185 km from the capital city, Naypyidaw. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 20009’ N and 94057’ E.


Climate of Magway:

During summer season the normal temperature is 340C and in winter temperature drops to 70C.


History of Magway:

During the British rule in Myanmar, a Geologist was appointed to find locations containing natural and mineral resources. After touring part of the country, the geologist submitted his finding to the then Governor stating that the areas in Magway Division are rich with fossil deposits. Further on Archeologists found an ancient city formed at the time of Pyu dating to 2000 years in Taungdwingyi Township.

Magway is located in central part of the country and most of the populace speak Burmese, Jingpho, Kayah, Karen, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. However, Burmese is the official language of the country. Inter city transportation is facilitated by Buses, Cycle Rickshaws, Horse Carriage, Ferry and Taxis.

The Irrawady River serves as the water route for transportation in the Magway Township. There are also long distance Ferry services to Thayetmyo, Allanmyo, Chauk, Yenangyaung, Gangaw, Pakokku, Minbu and vice versa.

Magway is also served by Magway Railway Station located at the distance of 2 kms from city center and provides the train services to various places in the country.
