Gangaw is sited on the Asian continent towards the west of Myanmar in Magway Region in Gangaw District. It is also known as the city of Yaw. Magway Region was previously known as Magway Division. The place Gangaw is a township located in the Gangaw district and the river, Myit Thar flows through the township dividing the township into Gangaw and West Gangaw. Gangaw is at a distance of 505 km from the countries capital city, Naypyidaw and situated at an elevation of 376 meters above the sea level. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 2209’50” N and 9407’27” E.

 

Climate in Gangaw:

During summer season the average temperature is 340 C and in winter temperature drops to 70 C.

 

History of Gangaw:

During the British rule, a Geologist was appointed to find locations containing natural and mineral resources. After touring part of the country, the geologist submitted his finding to the then Governor stating that the areas in Magway Division such as Gangaw are rich with fossil deposits. Further on Archeologists began excavating various sites in the region most of them in and around Gangaw. Their findings proved that Myanmar was the place where the origin of Humanity was first born in this entire world.

Food & Culture of Gangaw:  

People of Gangaw speak Burmese, Jingpho, Kayah, Karen, Chin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. There are different religions worshipped in the Gangaw and majority of the inhabitants of Gangaw worship Buddhism, while others either worship Hinduism or Christianity.

Gangaw serves some of the delicious Burmese cuisines and there are plenty of restaurants and food joints in the town.

Mya Tha Lun Pagoda

This structure was created in the year 1929 is located in the capital city of Magway Region is one of the ancient temples in the city visited by thousands of devotees throughout the year.

 

Nga Ka Pwe Taung (Dragon Lake)

This lake is of geological importance because along with water that bubbles upwards comes a gas known as butane.

Means of Commutation to Gangaw:

Gangaw is well connected via airways, located in the middle of the town and there are daily flights from Gangaw Airport to places like Yangon, Mandalay and other places within the country.

Gangaw is well connected via road to places within Myanmar. There are Buses available daily commuting passengers from Gangaw to places such as Mandalay, Kalaymyo and other places on the Kale-Gangaw Route, Mandaly-Gangaw route.

Intercity transportation is facilitated by Buses, Cycle Rickshaws, Horse carriage, Ferry and Taxis.

The Myit Thar River provides the water route for transportation in the Gangaw Township. There are also long distance Ferry services to place such as cruises commuting passengers from Gangaw to Thayetmyo, Allanmyo, Chauk, Yenangyaung, Magway, Pakokku, Minbu and vice versa.
