Gan is the oldest island in Maldives and H.C.P Bell visited the island in the year 1922, while on research he discovers the ancient Buddhist ruins and small temple was also found but during the Second World War, in the year 1941 the Royal Navy established a base in Gan Island and destroyed all the temples to construct the airport base in the island. This base was used to transport all the major weapons to various countries around the world and later this island came under the Maldives and transformed this base to civil airport.
