Copan is a town located Copan Department in the western part of Honduras in Central America, is located at the border of Guatemala is situated at an elevation of 700 meters (2,300 feet above the sea level and Copan is identified as the Copan Ruins, as there are several Maya ruins in town. Copan is surrounded by Macuelizo, Lepaera, Santa Fe, Ocotepeque, Citala, La Union, San Marcos is located at the distance of 348 kilometers from the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa and Gracias and coordinates of Copan are 14.8400° N, 89.1400° W.

 

History of Copan:

Copan has a long history and was ruled by Tikal in the early 5th century AD and later became the powerful Maya City and was settled along the Copan River. First ruler of the city was K’inich Yax K’uk’ Mo’ from 426 to 437 BC and later was ruled by several dynasties and the last ruler was Ukit Took. During the rule each kingdom contributed to the city development by constructing various monuments. In the year 1576, Spanish captured the Copan and declared the World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
