Attock is a district located in the Punjab Province to the East of Pakistan, is an administrative centre for the Attock district located to the Northwest in Punjab Province on the banks of river Indus, at a distance of 425 Km from Lahore, the capital of Punjab Province.  The capital city Islamabad is around 95 Km to the East from the town of Attock.  The city of Peshawar is around 80 Km to the West and Rawalpindi around 85 Southeast.  The province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is to the North and also to the North West of Attock.

 

Attock with an area of about 6800 Sq. Km is known for its oil and gas reserves and the River Kabul that flows from Kabul in Afghanistan around 400 Km to the West drains in Indus River and that has created a natural Attock-Kabul corridor, to reach Central Asian countries. The Pakistan’s Aeronautical establishment is located in Attock.

 

Climate in Attock is hot summer and cold winters in the plains and moderate climate in the mountainous regions of Attock.

 

 

History of Attock in Pakistan:

 

Attock is previously known as Campbell pur named after the British administrator Sir Colin Campbell who was in charge of the Attock district when Attock was under the control of British since 1849.  Attock has long history since the invasion of the region by the Alexander III the Greek King of Macedon in 325 BC and later ruled by the various dynasties of Hindu and Buddhist religion until the Arab invasion in the 11th century and the introduction of Islam in the region and then being expended by the Moghul and Maratha empires before coming under British rule in 1850s.

One can indulge in Partridge and Duck and Deer hunting in Attock in Kala-Chita hill range which is just 30 Km away to the South.

The Grand Trunk Road passes via Attock connecting the cities to the East from India along the Grand Trunk Road to the cities in the West of Attock to Afghanistan.  Rawalpindi and Islamabad are around 90 Km and 100 Km to the East of Attock connected by GT Road. The railway station at Attock Khurd at a distance of 15 Km is the nearest to reach Attock by train.  The International airport at Islamabad at a distance of 100 Km and the Bacha Khan International Airport at a distance of 70 Km are the nearest airports to reach Attock.
