Vizianagaram is a well known city as well as the administrative headquarter of Vizianagaram District in Andra Pradesh State in India. It is located about 68 kms from Vishakhapatnam and about 669 km from Hyderabad City. Vizianagaram District is spread in an area of 6,539 sq. km. and is placed at an altitude of 58 meters. The Pin Code of Vizianagaram begins from 535 001 and its coordinates are 18.12°N 83.42°E.

Vizianagaram District is surrounded by Rayagada district of Odisha in the north, Srikakulam district towards east, Koraput district of Odisha to the northwest and Visakhapatnam district towards southwest.

Vizianagaram is one of the main industrial and educational hubs of Andra Pradesh State. Paddy is the main agricultural crop of Vizianagaram and also the local farmers grow Ragi, Bajra, Sugarcane, Pulses, Mestha, Cotton and Groundnut along with Paddy. Vizianagaram is rich in mineral resources like Manganese, Limestone, Granite and Quartz. Nagavali River and Gosthani River are the major rivers that flow through Vizianagaram.

 

History of Vizianagaram:

The literal meaning of Vizianagaram is ‘the city of victory’. Vizianagaram was ruled by several famous dynasties like Kalinga Dynasty, Gajapati Empire, Golkonda Ruler, Mauryas, Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Mughals and the British. The renowned Vijayanagara Empire ruled Vizianagaram for many years. Vizianagaram came into existence as a district on June 1, 1979.

Sri Rama Temple is the temple of Lord Rama in Ramatheertham Village in Nellimarla Taluk in Vizianagaram District. It is situated about 13 km distance from Vizianagaram City. It is believed that the temple is more than 1000 years old and the temple comprises of the idols of Lord Ramachandra Swamy, Sita Devi and Lakshmana. The temple is in near proximity with beautiful lake and the local devotees celebrate Sri Ramanavami and Vaikunta Ekadasi festival with great enthusiasm.

 

Bobbili:

Bobbili is an old town well known for its Bobbili Fort. The fort witnessed the war between king of Bobbili and the Zamindar of Vizianagaram. Also the Bobbili town is home to famous Venugopala Swamy Temple.

 

Venkateswara Alayam, Govindapuram:

Venkateswara Alayam is a prominent temple located in Govindapuram Village about 19 km away from Vizianagaram City. Venkateswara Alayam is devoted to Lord Venkateshwara Swamy, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and well known for its picturesque beauty. Gita Mandir is another top attraction placed in the vicinity of Venkateswara Alayam.

 

Saripalli:

Saripalli is a village situated on the banks of River Champavathi in Nellimarla Mandal. Dibbi Lingeswara Swami Temple is the major attraction of the village and it is said that this historical temple was built by Chalukya Empire.
