Marijampole is a Lithuanian city belonging to the county of Marijampole, located near the borders of Russian Kaliningrad oblast and Poland. It is the centre of both Suvalkija region and Marijampole County, located about 85 km southwest of Kaunas city and 180 km west of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.

The city of Marijampole is divided into 2 parts by the Sesupe River, joined by 6 bridges. Lying between 54°34′ N latitude and 23°21′ E longitude, Marijampole is spread over an area of 205.07 sq. kms.

 

History of Marijampole:

Marijampole is also called as Mariampole, Marijampolis, Mariyampole, Kapsukas and Pasesupiai. Marijampole initially originated as a village under the name Pasesupe and later in the middle 18th century, it was renamed as Staropole but it was devastated by a fire in the year 1765. Few years later, with the contribution of Franciszka Szczukowa née Butler, there was a monastery built along with a new town with name Maryampol at the site of destroyed village.
