Jonava is a city belonging to the county of Kaunas in central Lithuania, covering an area of 13.6682 sq. km. It is the 9th largest city of the country in terms of population, situated about 30 km northeast of the county capital, Kaunas and 100 km northwest of the national capital, Vilnius.

Along with tourist attractions and sport activities, Jonava is famous for its educational institutions. Jonava is popularly called the “capital of midsummer holiday”. Another interesting fact about Jonava is, the biggest fertilizer factory in the Baltic States, “Achema” is located in the vicinity of the Jonava city.

Jonava is geographically positioned between 55°4′20″ N latitude and 24°16′50″ E longitude, holding 13 city regions including Juodmena, Senamiestis and Lietava.

 

History of Jonava:

In the 18th century, Jonava was founded as a city officially. Before the Second World War, Jonava had more Jewish population and in the attack of Nazi Germany on Jonava during the World War II, 552 Jews were killed.

The House of Municipality Government is located in the city centre of Jonava in the pleasant environment. Tourists can also spot a monument of Lithuanian jurist, Abraomas Kulvietis in front of the municipality building.
