Ukmerge is a city belonging to the Vilnius County in Lithuania, situated about 80 km northwest of the national capital, Vilnius. It is renowned for its museums, churches and cultural centres.

 

Geography of Ukmerge:

Ukmerge is geographically positioned between 55°15′ N latitude and 24°45′ E longitude.

 

History of Ukmerge:

Ukmerge is also called as Vilkmerge which is derived from the Vilkmergele River. In historical records, Ukmerge was originally mentioned in the year 1333 as a settlement. The fortress of Ukmerge was built on a hill in the vicinity of Vilkmergė, and the Šventoji rivers confluence and in the 14th century, it was heavily damaged by the many attacks of Teutonic Knights and the Livonian Order.

The first catholic church of Ukmerge was constructed in 1387 as one of the first Roman Catholic churches of Lithuania. Ukmerge achieved city rights in 1486 and it was renamed Ukmerge in 1918.
