Alytus is the capital city of the Alytus County in Lithuania geographically positioned between 54°24′ N latitude and 24°3′ E longitude, around 125 km southwest of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Alytus comes under the Dzukija region housing many famed cultural centers and historical sites all around.

 

Geography of Alytus:

Alytus is located on the banks of the River Nemunas covering an area of 45 sq. km. Alytus was divided into two parts, Alytus I and Alytus II around 100 years ago.

 

History of Alytus:

It is believed that, Alytus takes its name from the Lithuanian river Alytupis and according to the historical records, especially in the Chronicles of Wigand of Marburg; Alytus was originally called as Aliten. Alytus gained city rights in the year 1581 and the Saint Mary church is the main historical landmark in Alytus.

Alytus is served by the Kaunas Airport which is located around 105 km away from Alytus, operating flights from and to Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, London, Stockholm, Riga and other major European cities. The main airport of the country, Vilnius International Airport is situated about 110 km away from the centre of Alytus city.

Buses are regular between Alytus, Kaunas and Vilnius and Alytus is also connected through motorway to Hrodna in Belarus.
