Visaginas is a Lithuanian city coming under the Utena County. It is the seat of the Visaginas municipality, located in the proximity of the Druksiai Lake, the largest lake in Lithuania and also there is a nuclear power plant, called Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant which is the only nuclear power plant in Lithuania, one of the powerful units in the globe.

 

Geography of Visaginas:

Visaginas coordinates with 55.598° N latitude and 26.438° E longitude, is located about 65 km east of the county capital, Utena and 150 km northeast of the national capital, Vilnius.

 

History of Visaginas:

According to the historical sources, Visaginas was once settled by the Selonians in the past. Between the 14th and 19th centuries, Visaginas was several times attacked by Livonian, French, Swedish and Russian forces and most parts of settlement were destroyed. The present settlement dates back to the 1975 and gained city status in the year 1995.
