Utena is a Lithuanian city located in the county of Utena in the northeastern part of the country. It is the seat of both Utena district and Utena County, located about 100 km northeast of the Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.

Utena was earlier called by several names and the present name was given in 1261. Until coming under of Czarist Russian rule in 1795, Utena belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Utena geared up towards developments with the construction of St. Petersburg-Warsaw road between 1830 and 1835.
