Bluefields is a municipality and the capital of the Region Autonoma del Atlantico Sur in Nicaragua, situated at the mouth of Escondido River on Bluefields Bay and geographically positioned at an elevation of 82 feet (25 meters) above the sea level and there are many villages in the municipality and the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast is located in the city. Bluefields is located at the distance of 365 kilometers from the capital of Nicaragua, Managua and coordinates of Bluefields are 12.0000° N, 83.7500° W.


History of Bluefields:

Bluefields was the home for pirates on the Escondido River and later in the year 1602, one of the Dutch formed the colony in the region. Miskitos settled in the region in the year 1740 and later in the year 1847 various developments like Moravian Church and colonies were established in the region. Slaves from Jamaica arrived to Nicaraguan during the 19th century and later region grown gradually.

Moravian Church:

Moravian Church was constructed in the year 1849 and was destroyed in the hurricane Juana and later it was renovated and church attracts the tourists due to its architecture and typical stained glass.

Boat services to Bluefields is available from Rama town located at the distance of 73 kilometers and serves with regular ferries to Bluefields and Bluefields port is one of the major ports in the country which is guarded by the military.


By Road:

Bluefields is connected through dirt road to other parts of the country and there is no proper land transportation to Bluefields and the best way to reach Bluefields is one should hire boat from Rama town.
