Nakhchivan is the capital city of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in Azerbaijan. It is placed about 750 kms southwest of Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. Nakhchivan is also written and spelt as Naxcivan, Naxcivan, Nachidsheuan and Nakhichevan.

Geography of Nakhchivan:

Nakhchivan has a total area of 15 sq. km. located at the coordinates of 39°12′32″ N 45°24′44″ E. It is positioned on the banks of River Nakhchivan at an average elevation of 1000 meters.

Nakhchivan experiences a continental semi-arid climate with long and very hot summers and short and cold winters.

 

History of Nakhchivan:

It is said that, Nakhchivan was founded by Noah during 1539 BC. The name of Nakhchivan is derived from two words ‘Nakh’ means first and ‘ichevan’ means settlers. It is believed that, Armenians were the first inhabitants of the Nakhchivan.
