Lida is a city belonging to Hrodna Voblast of Belarus covering an area of 25 sq. km. and is situated about 175 km west of the country capital, Minsk. Lida is noted for historical sites such as Lida Castle, the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross and the Church of St. Joseph.

Lida is located between latitude 53°53′ in the north and longitude 25°18′ in the east with an average elevation of 158 meters.

 

History of Lida:

Lida got its name from the River Lidzeya which may be derived from the Lithuanian appellative Lyda – Lydimas which means fuse, to cast. The noted history of Lida begins with the construction of a brick fortress by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas in 1323. Lida also witnessed the rule of many prominent empires including Russian Empires in the past.
