There are about 6 theories about the origin of name Gomel, one theory states that, the name of Gomel may be derived from the Homiejuk stream which flows into Sozh River and another theory claims that, Gomel derives its name from the word ‘Gomu’. It was also called by different names such as Homij, Homyj and Homiej between 12^th century and the 16^th century.
