There are about 6 theories about the origin of name Gomel, one theory states that, the name of Gomel may be derived from the Homiejuk stream which flows into Sozh River and another theory claims that, Gomel derives its name from the word ‘Gomu’. It was also called by different names such as Homij, Homyj and Homiej between 12th century and the 16th century.

 

Connectivity to Gomel:

Gomel is catered by its own airport with seasonal flights to Kaliningrad, served by Belavia, located 8 km away from the city centre.
