Daugavpils is the second largest city of Latvia after the national capital Riga, geographically positioned at 55°52′30″ N 26°32′8″ E. It is located near the Latvian borders with Belarus and Lithuania and is around 120 km from the Russian-Latvian Border. Daugavpils is one of the industrial hubs as well as an important railway junction of Latvia.

 

Geography of Daugavpils:

Daugavpils is situated on the banks of the River Daugava in the southeastern part of the country, around 225 km southeast of Riga, the capital of Latvia. Daugavpils is spread over a total area of 72.48 sq. km measuring a highest elevation of 139 meters and features a moderate continental climate.

 

History of Daugavpils:

Daugavpils takes its name from the Daugava River in the 1920 and before this name Daugavpils was called by the different names such as Dinaburg, Borisoglebsk, Dinaburg and Dvinsk during the rule of the different empires.

 

Connectivity to Daugavpils:

Daugavpils has its own airport, situated around 12 km away from the city centre and is currently under restoration. So it is advised for international tourists to reach Riga International Airport (around 230 km) first and then take taxi or train or bus from there to Daugavpils.

There are daily four trains running between Daugavpils and Riga, served by Latvian Train Service.

Buses depart Riga Bus Station every two hours to the Daugavpils city.

Taxis and buses are options to get around and taxis generally charge 0.40 Ls/km during day time.
