Cat Island is one of the islands that form the country of Bahamas. It is situated between altitude 24°25′ in the north and longitude 75°31′ in the west, covering an area of 389 sq. km. Mount Alvernia is the main identity of Cat Island sited at a height of 63 meters with a monastery ‘The Hermitage’ on the top, erected by Father Jerome. Cat Island was the home town of renowed Bahamian musician Tony McKay (Exuma).

The major towns of Cat Island are Arthur’s Town, Port Howe and Orange Creek. Armbrister Plantation, Mt. Alvernia Hermitage, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Deveaux House are the prime landmarks of Cat Island.

 

History of Cat Island:

There are two theories about the origin of the name Cat, one theory states that, the name Cat derives from a pirate, Arthur Catt and other theory claims that, Cat is named because of the large population of feral cats.

There are two airports in Cat Island, New Bight Airport and Arthur’s Town Airport. New Bight Airport is located in New Bight with scheduled services to and from the national capital Nassau and Arthur’s Town.
