Cochamo is a commune belonging to the Llanquihue province in the Lakes region of Chile, situated around 110 km east of Puerto Montt (provincial capital) and 1060 km south of Santiago (national capital). There is a valley called ‘Cochamo Valley’ situated in the proximity of the town famous for large hills and walls of granite.

 

Geography of Cochamo:

Cochamo is placed in the south east of the province between latitude 41°30’0″ in the south and longitude 72°19’0″ in the west. It has a total area of 3,910 km².

 

History of Cochamo:

The history of Cochamo dates back to pre-Hispanic times when the first settlement was found and the large settlement inhabited the town during the middle of the 19th century. The commune of Cochamo was founded in 1979.

 

Connectivity to Cochamo:

El Tepual Airport in Puerto Montt is the closest airport to Cochamo situated around 110 km away from Cochamo. This airport is served by LAN (Balmaceda, Castro, Punta Arenas, Santiago de Chile) and Sky Airline (Balmaceda, Punta Arenas, Santiago de Chile). It is also used by charter flights to serve tourists.

There are daily 3 buses running between Puerto Montt and Cochamó.

For local travel car and minibuses are available. It is better to use guided tours, they offer horse to your ride with suggestion and generally cost between $18.000 and $25.000 pesos per horse and they also arrange lodging and delicious food sometimes.

 

Culture, Food and Shopping in Cochamo:

Cochamo is home to two public libraries, one is located in Cochamó town and another in Rio Puelo.

With a total area of 250,000 acres, Cochamo Valley is situated around 6 km away from the town Cochamo. It is a paradise of kayakers, rock climbers and trekkers.

 

Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park:

Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park is spread over an area of 2,530 sq. km. and was established in 1956 to preserve indigenous flora, fauna and the body of Todos los Santos Lake. Eye catching Petrohue Waterfalls is the prime attraction of the park.

 

Petrohué Waterfalls:

Situated within Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Petrohué Waterfalls is striking natural beauty located in the proximity of the source, Todos los Santos Lake. Guided tours are useful for easy exploring.
