Arvaikheer is the capital city of Ovorkhangai Province in the south of Laos, about 433 kms southwest of national capital Ulan Bator. It is the biggest city of the province, well known for goat herding, equestrian sports, horse festival and traditional crafts. Arvaikheer is home to one big hospital, schools, colleges, kindergarten, 3 hotels, restaurant and internet cafe.

Arvaikheer is positioned between 46°15′58″ N latitude and 102°46′40″ E longitude and experiences a semi-arid climate. It is the serene place in the country and features a dry winter.

Shankh Monastery;-

Shankh Monastery is one of the ancient historical monasteries of the country located in Ovorkhangai Province. It was built by the first Jebtsundamba Khutuktu ‘Zanabazar’ in the year 1647. The monastery is well known for its 7 Kalachakra Mandalas and is located in the vicinity of another famous monastery Tuvhun Monastery.

 

Erdene Zuu Monastery:

Erdene Zuu Monastery is a popular monastery situated about 2 kms away from Kharkhorin City in Ovorkhangai Province. The construction of the monastery was started in 1585 after Zanabazar’s meeting with third Dalai Lama. The Chinese style roofs are used to construct this monastery. It was once damaged during Dzungars and Khalkh Mongols war in 1688 and reconstructed in the end of 18th century.

 

Gandan Muntsaglan Khiid:

Gandan Muntsaglan Khiid is a monastery located 2 kms away from Arvaikheer City. It was destroyed in 1937 by Khorloogiin Choibalsan and reopened in 1991. This monastery is now home to 60 monks.

 

The Aimag Museum:

The Aimag Museum has a great collection of Mongol Empire relics located in Arvaikheer of Ovorkhangai Province.
