Jauja or Shausha is the capital city Jauja Province in Junin Region of Peru placed at an altitude of 3,400 meters. It is a tourist city receiving a large number of tourists throughout the year for its colonial buildings including Iglesia Matriz de Jauja and many grand festivals and religious events.

 

Geography of Jauja:

Jauja coordinates with 11°46′30″ S latitude and 75°30′00″ W longitude, is located around 45 km northwest of Huancayo, the capital of Junin Region and 265 km east of Lima, the capital of Peru.

Jauja enjoys a dry climate throughout the year which draws huge number of tuberculosis patients as the dry air is good for the lungs and kidneys.

 

History of Jauja:

Jauja was founded with name ‘Santa Fe de Hatun Xauxa’ as the capital of Peru on April 25, 1534 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro but it was replaced by Lima in 1535 as Peru’s capital. The name of Jauja was derived from the Quechua language.

 

Getting Jauja:

Juaja is catered by Francisco Carle Airport with scheduled flights to the national capital, Lima and many other domestic locations, served by LC Busre and Star Peru and airport is located within the city.

There are regular buses running between Jauja and Lima, operated many prominent private bus companies.

Constructed in 1564 with the blend of Baroque and Rococo architecture style, Iglesia Matriz de Jauja or Jauja Cathedral is a major church in Jauja renowned for its well carved wooden altars, the picture of Our Lady of the Rosary and historical retablos. It was rebuilt in 1921.

 

Capilla Cristo Pobre Church:

Capilla Cristo Pobre church or Poor Christ Chapel was constructed under Gothic architectural style. Tourists can also see the paintings of Via Crucis in Capilla Cristo Pobre church and this church belongs to the College of San Vicente de Paul.

 

Laguna de Paca:
