Grand Turk is an island belonging to Turks and Caicos Islands, an overseas territory of the British. Cockburn Town is the capital of Turks and Caicos Islands. Bermudians were the first colonizer of Grand Turk, colonized in 1681 and started salt industry on the island. It was internationally identified when Friendship 7 Mercury spacecraft of John Glenn landed in the proximity of the island of Grand Turk.

The airport in Grand Turk is named JAGS McCartney International Airport, located 3.5 km away from the capital, Cockburn Town. This airport is served by Air Turks and Caicos with scheduled flights to and from Providenciales and South Caicos airports.
