Bhimbetka is located in Raisen district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh which are known for rock shelters and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2003. These rocks depict the Paleolithic age which shows the earliest traces of human settlement in the sub continent. The rock shelters are located about 45 kms south of Bhopal near the Vindhya and Satpura Ranges.

The name Bhimbetka is associated with name of Bhima, son of Kunti and one of the main character in epic Mahabharata. It is said that the place is taken from Bhimbaithka meaning “Sitting place of Bhima”.

The rock shelters and caves in Bhimbetka are known for rock art and paintings. One can trace paintings going back to 30000 years old and the paintings are done using natural vegetable colors.
