Bhimbetka is located in Raisen district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh which are known for rock shelters and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2003. The rock shelters are located about 45 kms south of Bhopal near the Vindhya and Satpura Ranges.

The name Bhimbetka is associated with name of Bhima, son of Kunti and one of the main character in epic Mahabharata. It is said that the place is taken from Bhimbaithka meaning “Sitting place of Bhima”.
