Valkenburg is a city and municipality in the Netherlands belonging to the province of Limburg. It is located about 13 km east of the provincial capital, Maastricht and 215 km south of the national capital, Amsterdam.

The history of Valkenburg is centered on its castle as it witnessed many major wars in Dutch history. The natural tourism of Valkenburg emerged with the establishment of railway line from Maastricht to Heerlen and Aachen in 1853.

Valkenburg Castle:

The Valkenburg Castle was originally constructed in the year 1115 by Lord of Valkenburg, Gosewijn I. It was two times demolished in 1122 and 1672 by Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor and William III, Dutch troops leader in respectively. Currently it is in ruined condition, allowed for tourists’ visit.



Located on the River Geul, Oud-Valkenburg is a small village housing many scenic sites, 2 castles, a gothic church and many farmsteads. This village can be reached by rental vehicle.

Saint Nicolas church is one of the main religious sites in Valkenburg featuring many late Medieval wood carvings.
