The municipality of Venlo is a merger of several other municipalities like Belfeld and Tegelen which were joined Venlo municipality in 2001, and Arcen en Velden municipality merged into Venlo in 2010. During the 9th century, Venlo was one of the major trade centres in the Meuse-Rhine area and it gained city rights in 1343.
