Cochrane is a town and commune situated in the province of Capitán Prat in Chile. It belongs to Aisén Region, is situated around 2600 km south of the country capital, Santiago at an elevation of 199 meters. Cochrane is situated in the vicinity of famous peak, Monte San Lorenzo or Cerro Cochrane.

 

Geography of Cochrane:

Cochrane is geographically placed between latitude 47°15′17″ in the south and longitude 72°34′30″ west with an area of 8,930.5 sq. km. It enjoys an oceanic climate.

 

History of Cochrane:

Cochrane was formed in the year 1954 with name ‘Pueblo Nuevo’ and later it was renamed ‘Cochrane’ after Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald who was the British naval captain and the 1st Admiral of the Chilean Navy.

 

How to reach Cochrane?

Cochrane has its own airport situated around 2 km away from the town centre with limited connection. Tourists can reach downtown town by taking taxi or rental car from the airport.

The Carretera Austral (CH-7) is the highway which connects Cochrane with rest of Chilean cities. There are buses generally available to reach neighboring cities and also many local travel agencies offer bike and car for rent on hour and day basis. Booking car in advance will be better.

Alberto María de Agostini was the first man who climbed Monte San Lorenzo in the year 1943. It receives frequent climbers from both Argentine and Chilean regions and there are 3 large glaciers surrounding Monte San Lorenzo, one of which in Chile and remaining two in Argentina.

Baker Pioneers Museum was inaugurated on January 19, 2013 and here tourists can know the complete history of Cochrane town with plenty of ancient artifacts and photographs.

Cochrane Museum is divided into two rooms, one exhibits the geographical, environmental and natural resources of the region and another featured with history and culture of Cochrane from ancient to present Cochrane. It is open from 8:30 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 17:48 (Monday to Friday).
