History of Belem:

Belem was founded in the year 1616, by Portuguese and it became city in the year 1655. During the 17^th century, sugar trade was major source of income in the city and in the 18^th century cattle ranching boomed replacing sugar industry. Rubber trading was established in the year 1910 which became the main form of living in the region till now.
