Aileu is a township located between latitude 8°43′ in the south and longitude 125°34′ in the east in Aileu District of East Timor. It is situated about 37 km southeast of national capital Dili. Aileu District has an area of 729 sq. km. Aileu, Laulara, Lequidoe and Remexio are the sub districts of Aileu District.

Aileu District shares its boundaries with Manatuto District in the east, Dili District towards north, Ainaro District to the south, Manufahi District on the southeast and Ainaro in the south, Liquica in the northwest and Ermera District towards west.

Due to the near proximity with Dili and the good connectivity with major cities of the country, the corporate giants of the foreign countries are aiming Aileu to start their new establishments. Aileu is home to few good educational institutions and hospitals also.

 

History of Aileu:

Aileu was earlier called as ‘Vila General Carmona’ during Portuguese rule in East Timor. The name ‘Vila General Carmona’ is named after Portuguese ruler António Óscar Carmona. Aileu District was previously the part of Dili District and carved out from Dili District during the last part of Portuguese rule in East Timor.

 

Food of Aileu:

Rice is a widely used staple food in Aileu. Along with rice the natives of Aileu depend on other staple foods like cassava, sweet potatoes, corn, seafood, pork and chicken. Bibinka, Portuguese Tart, Tapai, Feijoada and Budu are the general dishes of Aileu locals.

Pope John Paul II statue is a 6 meter tall bronze statue located just behind the sea coast. It is situated about 38 km away from Aileu city centre. This is an added advantage for tourists to enjoy beauty of beach and nicely constructed statue at the same place.

 

Atauro Island:

Atauro Island is a worth visit spot, clearly visible from the city of Dili. It has a length of 25 kms and width of 9 kms and is spread over an area of 105 sq. km. It is placed 12 km away from Indonesian Island of ‘Liran’. Atauro Island is also well known for Boneka Atauro.
