Zhambyl can also be spelled as Jambyl is sited on the Asian continent in Kazakhstan towards the south. Taraz city is the capital of the province Zhambyl. Zhambyl province is at a distance of 950 km from Astana. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 4400’ N and 7200’ E. The Jambyl province has Karagandy province towards its north, and Almaty province towards its east. The Zhambyl province spans over an area of 144,200 km2.

During summer season the average temperature is 310C and in winter temperature drops to -170C.

 

History of Zhambyl:

As per the discoveries made by the Archeologists, the region formed part of the silk route which linked trade with countries such as China, India Byzantium and Persia. During the 6th century, the entire region of present day Jambyl province was controlled by the first turks. From the 4th to 3rd century the turks ruled entire Central Asia along with Arabs and Persians. During this period the city Taraz thrived. Many developments took place and trade prospered. The economy of the region prospered to great heights and the region formed a part of the silk route.

In the 9th century, the Persian conquered entire Central Asia. Existing religions were then converted to Islam and Churches were converted to Mosques. From 10 to 12th century, the region was invaded by Turkic Karakhanids who defeated the Persian inhabitants. The city was invaded in the year 1220 by the Mongols. The mongols plundered and looted the city of its wealth. The importance of the city was forgotten and so was the trade route.

In the 19th century a fortress was constructed on the ruins in the region of Taraz. People from neighboring regions began to settle down in areas surrounding the fortress. The name of the fortress was changed to Aulie-Ata in the year 1856.

The entire province of Zhambyl was conquered by the Russians in the year 1864. In the year 1938, the capital of Zambyl was changed to Dzhambul.

The year 1991 witnessed the end of the Soviet rule and the beginning of an independent country, Kazakhstan. In the year 1992 the province was named as Zhambyl and in 1997 its capital city was named as Taraz.

Languages spoken by the people of Zhambyl province are Kazakh and Russian. However, Kazakh is the official language of the country. Singing and dancing forms an integral part of the country. Either Islam or Christianity is the religion worshipped by some of the locals.
