Rijeka is surrounded by mountainous region in and stunning natural charm is the 3rd largest city and prominent port city in the country of Croatia. Rijeka spans over an area of 44 square kilometers (17 square miles) and highest elevation is 499 meters (1,561 feet) above the sea level and coordinates of Rijeka are 45.3167° N, 14.4167° E, placed on Kvarner Bay. Rijeka economy depends on shipbuilding and maritime transport and home to Croatian National Theater and University of Rijeka.

Rijeka is enclosed by Opatija, Kastav, Drazice, Cavle, Bakar, Kraljevica and Klana and sited at the distance of 160 kilometers from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.

 

History of Rijeka:

Neolithic settlement was established in the Rijeka region on the hill and mariner’s tribes were settled near the harbor. During the Roman rule, Augustus constructed the Tarsatica on the banks of River Rjecina and city was ruled by Ostrogoths, the Byzantines, the Lombards, the Avars, the Franks, the Croats, the Hungarians and the Venetians. In the year 1466, Austrian Habsburgs captured the Rijeka region and ruled for more than 450 years and Italy captured the region after the World War I and during the Second World War, Germany captured the Rijeka city and in Anglo-American air attacks, hundreds of civilians died in the year 1944 and in the year 1991, Rijeka became the part of Croatia country.
