Mansa is a Zambian city, functioning as the capital of the Luapula Province, situated between 11°12′ S latitude and 28°53′ E longitude. Mansa is located around 750 km north of the national capital, Lusaka and around 50 km east from Zambia’s border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Mansa is a noted tourist destination, mainly famous for its cathedral and the nearby Mumbuluma Falls.

 

History of Mansa:

Mansa was called Fort Rosebery during the British rule and the current name may be derived from either local head Mansa or Mansa River flowing near the city. Mansa’s development started in the middle of the 20th century with the exploration of agricultural products and fish to the nearby prosperous Copperbelt province.

 

How to reach Mansa?

Mansa houses an airport with a distance of 6 km from the city centre. Currently it does not operate any scheduled flights but it can be reached by charter flights.

The nearest international airport to Mansa is Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola. This airport operates flights from Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Kasama, Lusaka, Mansa, Solwezi and Nairobi and is located around 250 km from Mansa. Bus connection from Mansa to its nearby cities is limited, so rental cars would be an alternative option.

 

Food and Shopping in Mansa:

Mansa is relatively an upgraded city with all basic and modern facilities like large stores, daily market, banks, hotels, retail outlets and restaurants. Shoprite supermarket is a recommended shopping centre in Mansa.

The Mansa Catholic Cathedral is a religious as well as landmark site in the Mansa city. It is frequented by both devotees and tourists year round for its distinct construction and holiness.

 

Luapula River:

The Luapula River flows through the city of Mansa, where visitors can enjoy a wide range of water sport activities like swimming, fishing and walking on the river bank. It is also a nice relaxation point.
