Kaoma is a town functioning as the administrative centre of the Kaoma District in Western Province of Tanzania. Kaoma is situated around 410 km west of the Zambian capital, Lusaka. It is located at an elevation of 1,147 meters, between 14°48′00″ S latitude and 24°48′00″ E longitude.

History of Kaoma:

Before receiving the current name officially in 1964, Kaoma had been called by the different names in its history and some of them are Nkoya, Mankoya, Mankoye and Nankoya. Nkoya was the major name among them that may be derived from the first Zambian ethnic group inhabited what is today’s Kaoma and its surrounding towns in the 6th Century. They are still native to the area.

 

How to get Kaoma?

As like many airports in Zambia, Kaoma Airport is also inactive. The closest major airport to Kaoma is Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. This airport is located in the national capital, Lusaka, around 430 km east of Kaoma. It covers many European, African and Asian cities, including Amsterdam, Harare, Lilongwe, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Dubai, Johannesburg and Durban.

Buses are generally not regular between Kaoma and Lusaka, so it is suggested to visitors to hire a car for intercity travel.

Kazanga Annual Ceremony is the major and famous event taking place in Kaoma, which represents a local ethnic group, Nkoya. There are many lively shops and restaurants in Kaoma but most of them are traditional options.

The Kaoma Cheshire Orphanage is a nonprofit organization managed by the Touch Ireland, an Irish charity. It takes care of around 70 AIDS orphans, mainly children.

The Kaoma Farmers Market is one of the landmarks, shopping points as well as tourist attractions of Kaoma. It is a place where visitors can bag some locally produced agricultural products, handicrafts and costumes at affordable prices.

 

The Kaoma Women’s Center:

The Kaoma Women’s Center is an organization originated with an objective of strengthening the lives of uneducated local women. It also provides vocational job training.

 

Kafue National Park:

The Kafue National Park is Zambia’s with an area of 22,400 km².  It also holds the title of the 2nd largest national park of Africa. Located around 100 km east of Kaoma, the park houses around 55 different animal species. It is advised visitors to take a guided tour for easy exploration of the park.
