Guangzhou is sited on the Asian continent in the country, China. This place forms the center of administration of the province, Guangdong. The geographical coordinates puts the place at 23008’ N and 113016’ E. Guangzhou spans over an area of 7,434 km2. The place is 21 meters above sea level. During summer season the average temperature is 390C and in winter temperature drops to -130C.

 

History of Guangzhou:

According to historians, Guangzhou was known as Panyu during ancient times. It came under the rule of the Qin dynasty. The Nanyue Kingdom, presently known as Vietnam country, was part of the Panyu territory in 206 B.C. Later in 111 B.C the Nanyue kingdom was conquered by Han dynasty. In 226A.D the locals changed the name of the place to its old name Guangzhou. This place was once an important port in the south of the country, where traders would arrive from the far Middle East by ships.

The year 1517 saw the arrival of the Portuguese traders in Guangzhou. Later in the 17th century, the Dutch gained supremacy and established their trade.

The year 1690, saw the arrival of traders from various companies located in Europe; Middle East and India arrive at the ports of Guangzhou. During the 18th century, the first war was declared against the trade of Opium. During this war the British captured Canton on 18 March 1841. Another battle was fought on May 1841 in Canton.

In 1918, the place was officially declared as Guangzhou. Panyu was declared a separate country. The year 1937 marked the beginning of the 2nd Sino-Japanese War which lasted till the year 1945.  In the year 2000, Panyu became part of Guangzhou.

 

People & Culture Guangzhou:

The language spoken by the local people in Guangzhou is Cantonese Chinese. Apart from Cantonese Chinese, Hakka Chinese, Teochew Chinese, Luichow Chinese and Mandarin Chinese are some of the other forms of Chinese languages spoken in Guangzhou.

This river stretches to about 2,100 km and is one of the longest rivers in the country. In the evening, one can enjoy a cruise ride on the river or take a walk besides the river while enjoying the spectacular view at its banks.

 

  • Sacred Heart Cathedral

 

This cathedral also regarded as the stone house happens to be one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in Guangzhou and one of its kind. Work in creating this church commenced in the year 1888, and the construction took 25 long years to complete.  The church spreads over 35 meters and has a height of 78.68 meters.

 

  • Baiyun Mountain (White Cloud Mountain)

 

Also known as the ‘White Cloud’ Mountain, offers one of the most amazing natural scenery of Guangzhou.

 

  • Western Han Nanyue King’s Tomb Museum

 

The tomb was created in memory of the then Han dynasty ruler Nanyue who ruled between (206B.C to 24A.D). The museum also houses the 2000 years old history of Guangzhou.
