Bechar is an Algerian city located in the province of Bechar as its capital. It is situated between 31°37′ N latitude and 2°13′ W longitude, at an elevation of 747 meters, around 940 km southwest of Algiers, the capital of Algeria. The masts of Kenadsa longwave transmitter situated near Bechar measuring a height of 357 meters are considered as the Algeria’s tallest manmade structures.

Bechar is well known for coal mines, leather and jewelry works and also its surrounding areas has gained prominence for the production of vegetables, cereals, almonds and figs. Bechar covers a total area of 5,050 sq. km.

 

History of Bechar:

Bechar began to grow with the expansion of the coal mines in the beginning of the 20th century, before that it was a town with less population. Bechar was home to a French Foreign Legion post during the French rule in Algeria.

Bechar has an international airport, named Boudghene Ben Ali Lotfi Airport, is located around 4 km away from the heart of the city. The airport is served by Air Algérie with scheduled flights from Algiers and Oran.
