Tarkali is situated on the Indian continent in Maharashtra state in the district of Sindhudurg. The coordinates of Tarkali are 17045’47” N and 73044’29” E. Tarkali is 11 meter from the sea level. During the summer season the temperature ranges from 23 0C to 37 0C and in winter season the temperature ranges from 17 0C to 30 0C.

The best time to tour Tarakali is from the month of October to March.

History of Tarkali

During the pre-colonial and colonial times this place fell under the administration of Ratnagiri district. At present this place is under the administration of Sindhudurg district.

According to the mythology of the Hindus, the Pandavas when under exile, in the 13th century, visited these areas.

As per historians, the Kingdom of the Maurya dynasty extended till the coast of the Konkan region during the 6th century. The 16th century witnessed the arrival of European settlers such as the Portuguese along the Konkan coast. The Marathas defeated the Sultans in 1675 and annexed the entire coastal region. Their reign ended in the year 1817. The entire Konkan region witnessed the rise of the British power.

The year 1947 saw the end of the British Raj in the country, and marked the beginning of Indian Independence, under which the place, Tarkali came under the administration of the Government of Maharashtra state.

In the past, Tarkali was under the rule of Marathas and ever since then the Maratha culture dominated Tarkali.  The local language of Tarkali is Marathi. But nowadays one can expect to come across people speaking Hindi and English languages. People of all religion, such as Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs reside in and around Tarkali.

  • Malvan

This is the only town in the state of Maharashtra located at the coast where people speak both the languages, Konkani and Marathi.  There are plenty of temples in this dedicated to various Hindu gods. The Marine sanctuary which spans an area of 29.5km is the major attraction among the tourist in this place.

  • Tarkali Beach

This beach rests at the union of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. The depth of the sea is about 21feet and it offers crystal clear water, hence is the most preferred tourist beaches near Tarkali.

  • Sindhudurg Fort

The fort was constructed during the reign of the great Maratha king, Shivaji. The work on construction of the fort was commenced in the year 1664 and ended in the year 1667. The fort is situated on an island and spans over an area of 50 acres.

  • Dhamapur Lake

This lake spans over an area of 10 acre. Some of the tourism agencies have organized water sports events on this lake. This is a manmade lake created in the year 1530, by the then King Nagesh Desai. On one side of the lake is a village named Are and on the other side is the village Katta.

  • Shree Shivchhatrapati Temple

This temple was constructed in the year 1695, by the son of the great Marathi ruler, Shivaji. This temple has idol of the king Chhattrapati  Shivaji.
