Sylhet is a metropolitan city located in Sylhet District of Sylhet Division, Bangladesh. Sylhet is placed on the banks of River Surma at an altitude of 35 meters. Sylhet is located about 248 km northwest of national capital Dhaka.

Sylhet is located between latitude 24°53′52″ in the north and longitude 91°52′17″ in the east and is bounded by Netrokona District in the west, Indian states of Tripura to the south, Assam towards east and Meghalaya on the north. Sylhet has a humid subtropical climate.

Sylhet is considered as one of the highly emerging cities in the country houses several big shopping malls, star hotels and apartments. Sylhet is also home to one Special Economic Zone. Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and Sylhet Engineering College are the prime educational institutions at Sylhet.

 

History of Sylhet:

Before the Independence of India, Sylhet was the part of India and after the Independence Sylhet was merged with Pakistan. During Bangladesh Liberation War in 1970 Sylhet contributed well.

There are two railway stations at Sylhet namely Sylhet New Railway Station and Sylhet Old Railway Station located 2 km and 2.5 km away from the centre of Sylhet City respectively.

Sylhet has its own airport named as M.A.G Osmani Airport placed 9 km away from the heart of Sylhet City.

Lawacherra Rain Forest is considered as one of the major forest in the country. Asia’s one Chloroform tree is located in the forest and also the forest is home to deer, leopard, wild chicken, squirrel, and python.

Sree Mangal is widely popular for largest tea gardens of the globe. Also houses tea research institute and most of the tea estates of the country. Sree Mangal is popularly called as the tea capital of Bangladesh.

Joinpur is one of the regions of Sylhet District located 4 km away from the centre of Sylhet City. Bhairav temple and Sri Mahalakshmi temple are the prime attractions of Joinpur.
