Sliema is a town situated on the island of Malta in Malta, around 6 km north of the national capital, Valletta. It is a commercial and residential area with many world class hotels, resorts and apartment blocks. Sliema is also famous for its historical sites and feasts.

 

Geography of Sliema:

Spread over an area of 1.3 sq. km, Sliema is located on the northeast coast of the Malta Island between 35°54′44″ N latitude and 14°30′15″ E longitude.

 

History of Sliema:

The name of Sliema is derived from a chapel devoted to the Virgin Mary in the town. Sliema began to grow around the church of Our Lady Star of the Sea in 1855 and became a famous summer resort in the second half of the 19th century with the establishments of many restaurants, nightclubs and entertainment centers.

 

Connectivity to Sliema:

Sliema is situated about 9 km away from the heart of Malta International Airport which is served by Air Malta as a national airline. Other prominent airlines serving MIA include Air Berlin, Air France, EasyJet, Ryanair and British Airways.

There are direct buses available at the airport to Sliema and in addition, taxis are also accessible.

Sliema is also connected by buses to Bugibba, Mdina and Cirkewwa.

The town of Sielma houses many travel agencies offering cars and bikes for rent to move within the island.
