Rio Grande is a municipal town in Puerto Rico, surrounded by Las Piedras in the south, Loíza in the west and Luquillo in the east. It is situated on the northeast coast of Puerto Rico Island covering a total area of 232.11 sq. km. Rio Grande municipality holds eight wards and Rio Grande Pueblo.

History of Rio Grande:

Desiderio and Quilimaco Escobar were the founders of Rio Grande who found it with the approval of governor Miguel López on July 16, 1840. Río Grande takes its name from Río Grande (river).

 

How to reach Rio Grande?

Río Grande is served by Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Carolina which is the major airport of Puerto Rico, located around 18 km away from the downtown Río Grande and has connections with most of the major North American and European cities.

Río Grande is situated about 23 km away from San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. There are regular buses plying between Río Grande and San Juan that pass through Carolina city.
