San German is one of the major cities of Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the USA. It is the 2nd oldest city of Puerto Rico, behind San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico and is located around 105 km northeast of San Juan.

 

Geography of San German:

San German is situated in the southwestern part of Puerto Rico, bordering with Hormigueros in the west, Sabana Grande towards east, Mayagüez in the north and Lajas towards south.

San German occupies a land area of 141.18 sq. km located at an altitude of 161 meters and its coordinates are 18°N 67° W.

 

History of San German:

The history of San German dates back to 1573 when it was constructed as a city. It was officially named Nueva Villa de Salamanca but natives called it ‘San German el Nuevo’ which means ‘the New San German’.

Eugenio Maria De Hostos Airport is the nearest major airport to San German located at a distance of 20 km from the downtown San German. This airport is served by Cape Air with frequent flights to San Juan.

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is situated around 105 km away from San German. It is in Isla Verde in Carolina, close to San Juan.

San German is served by public buses and tourists can also use taxi or car to get around.

It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places list in the year 1976.

Church San Germán de Auxerre was built in 1688 by the Spanish and was rebuilt several times between the 18th and 19th centuries. It gained place in National Register of Historic Places list in 1984.
