Nimroz is situated in southwest part of Afghanistan bound by Kandhahar, Iran, Farah and Hilmand as its adjoining districts and country. Nimroz comes in Nimroz Province and Zaranj is the capital city of Nimroz. Nimroz covers a total area of 41356 sq kms and Pashto, Balochi and Dari are the most widely spoken languages of the people living in this part of the country. Most of the region is thinly populated because the province falls in the desert zone and it coordinates with 31.0’ degree North Latitude and 62.5’ degree East Longitude.

 

Nimroz History and Meaning:

The name Nimroz is derived from Persian word Nimruz which means ‘mid day’ or ‘half day’ as the meridian splitting the world passes through this region. Nimroz was part of Medes, Achaemenid Empire followed by rule of Alexander the Great. It came under the rule of Saffarid Dynasty in 860 A.D. followed by Ghaznivads, Ghuruds, Timurids and Safavids who ruled this place. Nimruz became a part of Hotaki dynasty in the early 18th century until 1968 when it became separated from Chakhansur Province and became an independent province.
